Homeowners Fighting Rising Food Costs By Gardening

Recently, some of the best known food manufacturers announced that they would be reducing the size of their food products in order to combat increased fuel costs. Most people probably won’t even notice the changes, however, homeowners on a budget have already felt the effects. Single homeowners and large families both know how important it is to carefully calculate every food product that is purchased. Meats, fresh fruits and vegetables and dairy products are less likely to go on sale, so some enterprising property owners are beginning to take matters into their own hands.

The largest gardening boom since the start of World War II is currently taking place. Thanks to technologies such as hydroponic and aeroponic gardening, homeowners are able to grow food even if they only own a small plot of land. Not all homeowners are gardening to save money. The sale of lawnmowers and other landscaping tools has not decreased since the recession began.

In urban areas, condo owners and apartment dwellers are growing vegetables in their own homes, on rooftops and even in abandoned lots. Rural homeowners are able to take full advantage of sprawling acres of available land. In addition, homeowners are learning how to can and jar their produce so that it will last longer. Not everyone is attempting to save money by using their green thumbs, but a large subset of the population has decided to take up gardening. As the summer approaches, food prices will likely increase again, but by them home gardeners will be harvesting the first crops of the season.
